STEPHEN JONES
Composer Stephen Jones has been honored with commissions from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, the Barlow Endowment for Music Composition, the Utah Arts Festival, the Meadows Wind Ensemble at Southern Methodist University, St. Thomas University, Emory University, and Temple University-based choreographer Eva Gholson.
Jones’ works have been played throughout the United States and internationally, including performances by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Cleveland Chamber Symphony, the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, the Utah Symphony, the Fairbanks Symphony, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, the Sybil Dance Company, Philadanco, and many other professional and university-based ensembles. His works have been heard in performances and readings at the Aspen, Ernest Bloch, Lancaster, and June in Buffalo Festivals and at national conferences of the Society of Composers, the College Band Directors National Association, the Percussive Arts Society, and the Society for Electro-Acoustic Music. Jones’ new work Passages was recent premiered at the British Association of Symphonic Bands and Wind Ensembles Festival in Manchester, England, and will soon be released on CD.
Stephen Jones is deeply rooted in academe and serves as dean of the College of Fine Arts and Communications and professor of composition in the School of Music at Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah. Prior to his assignment as dean, he served as assistant to the academic vice president at BYU, coordinating the strategy and implementation of the university’s e-learning services.
Born in 1960, Jones studied composition as an undergraduate at Brigham Young University and received MM and DMA degrees in composition from the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music, where his principal teachers were Jonathan Kramer, Joel Hoffman, Alan Sapp, and Earle Brown. His studies also included work with Bernard Rands at Aspen and Joseph Schwantner at the Atlantic Center for the Arts.
Stephen Jones is the recipient of a Utah Arts Council Artist Grant, an Ohio Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowship, and a Composer Assistance Grant from the American Music Center. His work sing the earth for orchestra won a Judges’ Commendation for Excellence in the 1991 Barlow International Competition. He has since served as a member of the Board of Advisors of the Barlow Endowment for Music Composition and is now chair of the Board of Directors. His music can be heard on the Gasparo and Tantara labels. His works for wind band will be published in 2005 by Boosey and Hawkes as part of their Windependence series.
Jones resides in American Fork, Utah, with his wife, Wendy, and their four children.
